Our £3 million playgrounds revamp gets into full swing

The play refurbishment programme is part of our plans to upgrade 45 play areas over the next three years, with 25 sites being finished by the end of the financial year March 2022.

The play areas indicated below, with their budgets, were agreed by councillors at the Environment, Transport & Sustainability Committee in November 2019 and are next on our list to have an upgrade by March 2023   :-

Hollingdean Park Play Area                                                   Budget £100,000

Knoll Park Play Area                                                               Budget £60,000

Saltdean Oval Play Area                                                        Budget £50,000

Rottingdean Field Play Area                                                   Budget £30,000

Woollards Field Play Area (Maggie’s Corner)                        Budget £50,000

Whitehawk Way Play Area                                                     Budget £35,000

Woodingdean Central Play Area                                            Budget £40,000

The council has been working closely with the Friends of these play areas and would like your views on how the play area can be improved, making them accessible to all.

This online survey is a great opportunity for local residents, particularly parents and carers, to identify potential improvements and help shape the future of their play area for children and young people.

Due to ongoing maintenance requirements, water play do not feature as part of any upgrades, however, the new equipment installed will provide dynamic play, primarily for children aged 4 to 14, inclusive of all levels of ability.

Other areas of the open space will remain for informal play and leisure, with the new play features complementing the existing play equipment.

All safety surfacing will conform to BS EN 1177 European safety standards for play surfacing.

Only equipment and surfaces that are at end of life will be removed from any play area.

This programme is funded using Section 106 contributions received from developers as part of the planning process, Play Revenue and Capital Budgets. Therefore, these funds must be used to develop play in the specific area and cannot be used for any other purpose.

Due to this, please note that the toilets and cafés are not included as part of this consultation.

Once the consultation has closed, all the feedback will be carefully considered to help shape how we move forward to improve the play spaces.
