Notice of Motion

This Council notes:

1) That Brighton and Hove is known for its vibrant, award-winning beaches and attracts millions of visitors each year

2) Our beaches often appear on the list of best beaches in Sussex and the South-east

3) Seafront safety is of paramount importance to residents and visitors alike

4) There have been a number of tragic incidents and near misses along the coastline this year which are still subject to investigation

5) The Blue Flag status requires the highest degree of safety standards

6) The shameful criticism directed at the RNLI and other marine emergency services carrying out their duty to protect life at sea irrespective of the circumstance.

7) The return of the seafront patrol boat

8) The review of seafront safety which has already resulted in improved CCTV and lighting

This Council resolves to:

1) Reaffirm the Council's commitment to working in partnership with RNLI to promote seafront safety and support its lifesaving work protecting people along our coastline out without fear or favor.

2) Thank the excellent seafront team and other colleagues who have performed professionally and with compassion under difficult circumstances.,

3) Welcome the further investment in our iconic seafront as set out in the Seafront Development Prospectus and as recently announced by the Department for Transport to protect our seafront arches and support independent businesses.

4) Reaffirm the Council's commitment to maintaining Blue Flag status for all beaches that are so accredited.
