Honorary Freeman

To consider that, in accordance with Section 249(5) of the Local Government Act 1972, Mr. Henry Allingham, be admitted as an Honorary Freeman of the City of Brighton and Hove and enrolled on the Freeman’s Roll in recognition and appreciation of his exceptional services to his country during both World Wars and his work to ensure future generations would not forget the debt owed to all those who gave their lives to ensure freedom for all.

Minutes:

3.1           The Mayor explained that Section 249(5) of the Local Government act 1972 required the Council to hold a Special Meeting to confer the title of Honorary Freeman on persons who have, in the opinion of the Council, rendered eminent service to the Council and/or the City. 

 

3.2           The Mayor then called upon Councillors Mears to formally move the proposition to make Mr. Allingham a Freeman of the City. 

 

3.3           Councillor Mears stated that as the Leader of the Council she was truly honoured to be able to propose that Mr. Allingham be made an Honorary Freeman in recognition of his past achievements and his continued work with school children.  She felt humbled to be in the presnece of someone who had fought for her freedom in the First World War and wished to move:

 

"That the honour and title of Honorary Freeman of the City of Brighton and Hove be bestowed on Mr. Henry Allingham in grateful recognition of his exceptional services during both World Wars and his work to ensure future generations do not forget the debt owed to all those who gave their lives to ensure freedom for all.”  

 

3.4           Councillor Mitchell formally seconded the motion and stated she was extremely pleased to be able to support the motion and honoured that he was present to receive the award of the Freedom of the City.

 

3.5           Councillor Taylor and Watkins expressed their support for the motion on behalf of the Green and Liberal Democrat Groups respectively.

 

3.6           The Mayor noted that the motion had been moved and put it to the vote.

 

3.7           The motion was carried unamiously and Mr. Henry Allingham duely conferred as an Honorary Freeman of the City of Brighton and Hove.
