Save our Starlings

Lead petitioner Steve Geliot.

Minutes:

90.1      The mayor stated that where a petition secured 1,250 or more signatures it could be debated at the council meeting.  There were three petitions which had reached that threshold. The first was Save Our Starlings and he invited Mr Geliot and Ms Mc Curdy to join the meeting and to present the petition.

90.2      Mr Geliot and Ms McCurdy thanked the mayor and stated that the petition had been signed by over 105,000 people. The petition called for an outright ban on chemical fertilisers, herbicides, pesticides, fungicides and worming treatments across the entire City Downland Estate to help protect starlings whose number had drastically reduced.

90.3      Councillor Lloyd spoke in favour of the petition. He agreed that removing pesticides was important, but the current policy on pesticide use only covered Council owned property and therefore would like to work with others in the city on this matter.

90.4      Councillor O’Quinn spoke in favour of the petition and noted that there were many reasons for the decline in numbers, and whilst the use of pesticides had had an impact there were other issues such as loss of hedgerows which affected insect numbers.

90.5      Councillor Nemeth spoke in favour of the petition and said there should be a discussion at the Environment Transport & Sustainability Committee on the matter.

90.6      The mayor thanked Mr Geliot and Ms McCurdy for presenting the petition.

90.7      Council voted on the petition and agreed to note it and refer to Environment Transport & Sustainability Committee.

90.8      RESOLVED: That the petition be noted and referred to the Environment Transport & Sustainability Committee.
