Standards Committee
Purpose of committee
The Standards Committee sets the standards of conduct throughout the Council by advising the Council on the adoption or revision of the Codes of Conduct for Members and Officers, and promoting high ethical standards in public life generally.
The Committee is made up of six members from Brighton & Hove City Council, two members from Rottingdean Parish Council and four members of the public (known as independent members). All of the members have equal voting rights, but the Chairman must always be an independent member.
Three members of the Committee can come together to form a Standards Panel to hear and decide on ethical or standards complaints about Members of Brighton & Hove City Council, or Members of Rottingdean Parish Council. Membership for panels must always consist of at least one independent member, and a parish council member for Parish Council Standards complaints (for more information see the section on Standards Assessment Panels, Standards Review Panels and Standards Hearing Panels).
