Parking Controls for Albion Street, South Portslade

We the undersigned petition Brighton & Hove Council to introduce a controlled parking zone for residents on Albion Street, South Portslade - inclusion in Zone X

Following serious incidents since the last parking review in 2020, including significant cases of damage and potential physical harm, residents are asking the council to urgently formally review and implement a controlled parking zone on Albion Street.

The street is used for parking by people who come from outside of the area and local businesses (including a car garage on North Street). As a result, there are often drivers who do not know how to navigate the narrow street which presents a risk to people and vehicles.

In comparison to the surrounding roads, the unpermitted parking on Albion Street presents a unique risk to residents:

1. Public safety - with vehicles parked on both sides of the street, residents cannot access the pavements, forcing pedestrians into the road, which presents a particular risk for children and pushchairs, people using mobility aids and elderly people. With vehicles parked extremely close to our properties, it is also often difficult to access our own homes and has on occasion led to injury in trying to do so.

2. Damage to vehicles - many residents' cars on the street have been damaged due to the narrow passing space. In 2024, a resident's car experienced significant damage from a passing truck.

3. Waste collection and public health - often waste collection vehicles do not collect bins due to poor parking on the road and a lack of space for the truck. At times, this has led to overflowing rubbish and poses a public health risk. The street in unable to be cleaned due to cars on both sides.

We are asking for the parking on Albion Street to be reviewed with urgency, and in line with the English Devolution and Community Empowerment Act, with the intended outcome to be in the Zone X parking zone and to propose bays rather than pavement parking, which would improve safety and access for residents.
