Do not turn St Peters School into housing

We the undersigned petition Brighton & Hove Council to Not to use St Peter's School in St Peter's Road, Portslade as potential housing, it is not a suitable site and has much historical value with the building and air raid shelters.

This building could be put to much better community use without developing it into housing, such as health, a SEN school, community centre or other use. It has WW2 Air Raid Shelters beneath it and these should be retained and maintained for historical purposes for future generations. Turning it into housing is not a suitable use of this property.

Council response

The below response was provided by a relevant council officer:

Thank you for the petition regarding the future of St Peter’s School.

The Council recognises the concerns raised by petitioners and wishes to clarify the current position. No final decisions have been made in relation to the future use of the St Peter’s site, and no development proposals have been approved.

The site has previously been identified as having potential to support a small number of affordable homes, but this is only one option under consideration and no decision has been taken. Proposals remain at an early stage.

The Council has a responsibility to keep the use of all its land and buildings under review and to consider the best use of its assets in the public interest. Brighton & Hove continues to face an acute housing crisis, and the Council does need to explore opportunities to deliver new homes across the city, particularly genuinely affordable housing for local residents.

Any future proposals for the St Peter’s site would be subject to further work, the necessary statutory processes, and formal decision making. Any decisions would be brought forward transparently through future Cabinet reports and meetings, where they would be open to public scrutiny.

At present, therefore, there is no final decision on the future of the St Peter’s site.
