Safer crossings on Hollingbury Road
The T junction that links Hollingbury Road to Hollingbury
Crescent is very wide with cars coming from multiple directions (To
cross you need to look in all these different directions -towards
Fiveway's, South down Hollingbury road, East down Hollingubry
Crescent and Stanmer Park Road). Lots of school children must cross
this road in the morning/afternoon which is very busy and often
children must wait in the middle of the road between cars, as cars
can come from so many directions by the time you get half way the
traffic has changed on the other side. Plus, drivers often, either
leave their indicator on after leaving Fiveways and are not turning
or they forget to indicate and turn last minute creating further
confusion. Often cars are speeding off the Fiveways junction using
either Hollingbury Road or Hollingbury Crescent as a cut through to
Lewes Road. So the speed bumps need reinstating between the
Fiveways junction and the turning into Hollingbury Crescent to slow
traffic down and discourage cutting through. The current markers
for a crossing outside No 80 are also insufficient and barely
visible, with a upwards slope on both sides to enter the road,
meaning smaller people are harder to see especially when cars are
parked. A zebra crossing would make crossing at this point safer
(and much clearer as a crossing) which is also used by lots of
children going to and from school. I have seen on multiple times
one car stopping from one direction but not from the other
increasing the risk that a child will walk out not realising the
other car hasn't stopped. Both Crossings I've mentioned are a
through route for children going to Varndean school, Varndean
college and Dorothy Stringer school as well as from the other way
to Downs infants/ junior school. The combination of a high volume
of school children needed to use these routes combined with the
dangerous crossing points, heavy traffic and people speeding is a
disaster waiting to happen. Thank you for your time. Emma

Thank you for your petition and highlighting the 700 residents who signed this petition, concerned about road safety and the need for safer pedestrian crossing on Hollingbury Road and Hollingbury Crescent.
The good news is that we're listening. We're aware of your concerns. We have recently assessed this location as part of our Safer, Better Streets Programme and we agree there is a need. We recognise improvements could benefit vulnerable road users, as you describe, and the wider community. We have recently added Hollingbury Road junction with Hollingbury Road Crescent to our Safer, Better Streets Programme and it’s currently number 32 on the published list. We will continue to work through this list in priority order, considering feasibility, deliverability and resource availability.
In terms of the location near 80 Hollingbury Road, this can be reassessed in line with our Safer, Better Streets assessment process. Traffic calming measures already exist, and we apply strict thresholds relating to traffic flow, pedestrian volumes, collision history, visibility standards and road geometry for those higher-level measures. At present, the location does not meet all of these requirements, and this location may not meet requirements for additional interventions, such as zebra crossing, but we’ll have to keep that under review. That said, the traffic calming measures already in place, we appreciate some of the features, particularly existing road markings and the speed hubs would benefit from renewal. We will arrange for these to be refreshed as part of our routine line maintenance programme and the site will remain under review as part of our wider road safety programme.
I cannot understate the importance of having ward councillors’ continued and consistent support for proposed Safer, Better Street schemes, all the way through to completion. And therefore, may I credit Councillor Fowler for her support in your request and raising this directly with me. We appreciate the time and effort residents have taken to raise these concerns. Your feedback will continue to inform our future safety planning across the city.
May I also add, I have been invited to come and visit these two
locations with Councillor Fowler, and am more than happy to meet
residents and step through this to better understand that. But take
on board my points, I'm more than happy to take this forward from
here and keep under review.
