Traffic calming Nizells Avenue/Osmond Road Junction

We the undersigned petition Brighton & Hove Council to implement traffic calming at the junction of Osmond Road, York Avenue and Nizells Avenue. The 20-mph limit is largely ignored, there have been several collisions and numerous “near misses”. It is only a matter of time before a serious accident occurs. There is poor visibility for vehicles approaching at speed from York Avenue/Osmond Road due to a slight bend in the road. Pedestrians, dog walkers and cyclists take their lives in their hands trying to cross the junction to access nurseries, local schools and St Ann’s Well Gardens. The junction is a rat run for many vehicles including large HGVs, despite signs on Osmond Road indicating that the route is ‘Unsuitable for HGVs’. Many elderly residents live nearby and vehicles speed along Nizells Avenue creating a danger for children and dogs that run into the road from St Ann’s Well Gardens. There is persistent traffic noise and air pollution; car horns, squealing tyres, and irate motorists are a frequent nuisance

We require the council to address persistent traffic issues around the Nizells Avenue, Osmond Road junction

Council response

The Council receives many requests for transport infrastructure improvements across the city on a yearly basis. To manage this demand, we have recently introduced a new assessment process called Safer Better Streets – highway infrastructure priority. As part of this new process, requests will only be accepted via ward councillors. As your request was received via this route, by presenting your petition to the Transport Committee it will be included in the list for assessment. Please note that due to the number of assessments needed from requests in previous years, requests received after 31 March 2023 will be assessed in the 2024/5 financial year.
