Ban street parking along bus routes
Many roads are made unnecessarily difficult for buses to navigate due to the number of cars parked along the edge of the street. This adds to journey times because when buses are attempting to drive along these roads, they effectively become one-way streets, and buses must give way to oncoming traffic, or vice versa.
The primary purpose of public roads is for vehicles to travel along them, not for people to leave their unused cars lying around. Stopping parking along bus routes would make the full width of the road usable, and ensure that buses and other traffic could move in both directions.

Response provided by the Cabinet Member for Transport & City Infrastructure:
Thank you for your petition. Illegal parking that blocks buses is unacceptable. We recognise concerns about congestion on bus routes caused by parked cars. We have introduced red routes in both London Road and Lewes Road which have improved congestion, air quality, bus times and safety. We recently consulted a red route for Western Road and are exploring another for Queens Road near Brighton Station as part of a wider strategy.
However red routes and double yellow lines are not suitable everywhere, particularly in residential areas without off-street parking.
Brighton & Hove has one of the strongest bus networks in the country and we wish to further improve our good bus patronage building on recent improvements such as the new 1X, 3X and 25X express services and red routes bus journey times. There remains a balance of needs for bus passengers and car journey with many residents relying on both. It is not practical to restrict parking along every bus route. Our Parking Design and Implementation Team ensure parking bays allow buses and emergency services to pass safely. Our data-led approach, including emerging AI tools, helps us monitor traffic, safety and parking, encourage more bus journeys and to keep our city moving.
